MERRY LONDON expresses Japanese thanks for 2011

disaster support as the city prepares for the Olympic Games.

MERRY LONDON

MERRY PROJECT director Koji Mizutani is a man with a youth and energy that belie his age.  When we first meet on a reconnaissance trip for his latest project he has just stepped off the plane from Tokyo – a twelve-hour flight – and is eager to throw himself into the city.  He seems oblivious to the eight-hour time difference, 30C heat and growing pre-Olympic crowds. Leaping around, camera gripped in his skinny arms, he takes photographs of everything while flashing a toothy smile and saying, “ii ne, ii ne” – that’s nice, that’s great!

MERRY PROJECT

Mr Mizutani is in the UK to lead MERRY LONDON, a promenade through the City of Westminster by a team of volunteers wielding umbrellas emblazoned with the faces of smiling Japanese children.  It is part of his global Merry Smile Action campaign.  “The Japanese people received so much support from all over the world after last year’s tsunami”, he tells me after. “We have to say thank you”.

When we meet again several days later he is ready.  The volunteers gather in a sweltering Trafalgar Square, opening up the umbrellas like a Roman military phalanx in front of the gathering Japanese media and surprised tourists.  “Each one of those children lives in the disaster area”, he says. “And yet they can still smile.”

Taking as its base the idea that “the smile is a universal language”, the MERRY PROJECT concept began in Tokyo in 1999.  Since then, the group has collected 30,000 photographs of people’s smiles from around the world along with their handwritten answer to a basic question: “What does ‘merry’ mean for you?”  In 2008 Mr Mizutani displayed his work to the globe, unfurling over 1,000 umbrellas printed with smiling children’s faces at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

Following the Great East Japan Earthquake in March last year, which took 16,000 lives, left 3,000 injured and left local communities and industries destroyed, Mr Mizutani has taken the project a step further by launching Merry Smile Action, a series of global workshops and visits to the damaged area with the aim of using local children’s smiles to express hope for the future.  With the Olympic countdown coming to an end and the world’s attention focusing on London, Mr. Mizutani has seen a chance to show the appreciation felt by those affected.

“People all over the world are looking for answers – Obama et al, they’re all doing it – but no one can find them.  The young are angry.  They have no jobs; their wages are low, whereas in the past it was easy.  I’ve seen the houses that TEPCO [Tokyo Electric Power Company, the group that managed the Fukushima nuclear power plant] officials have built.  They have lifts in them!  They are all built from inflated wages.  The young are giving up, they’re losing their dreams and they’re not speaking out enough.  They should be even angrier!  Now is a great time for something to happen.”

私はTEPCO(福島原子力発電所を運営している東電)が

The Japanese earthquake and the London Olympics occurring so close together provides a great opportunity for Japan to gain a more international outlook and the world to learn from past mistakes.  Mr Mizutani sees the UK – ‘Merry England’ – as having a key role in this. “Japan and the UK have a similar balance.  We are both small islands; we both have royal families.  The two countries should lead the way, not with money and economics but love and peace.”  He seems taken by the view of British history shown in Danny Boyle’s Olympic opening ceremony.  “We saw a rural country transformed into the world’s first industrial nation.  Britain provided a model for the world.  The NHS was a new way of thinking too: Britain makes global culture. Japan looks like a rural backwater in comparison!”

NHS(イギリスにおける医療システム)も新しい考え方です。

He talks quickly, passionately, and his topics flit about and return.  At times it makes his Japanese – and his logic – hard to follow, but there is no denying the intelligence, drive and experience that lie in his small frame.  He constantly returns to the topic of creating a new global ideology. In his view socialism, capitalism and other traditional ‘isms’ have had their day.  We need a new, happier way based on society, quality and communication – ‘Merryism’.

This potentially merry future is what Mr. Mizutani wants to remind everyone of with his ‘actions’.  He relates his experiences in Rio.  “I was at the summit, and I was very disappointed by the focus on money and individual gain at the expense of the real debate on what the world needs.  However, by standing outside the conference hall with our umbrellas, we helped to remind the world leaders what they were supposed to be there for: on seeing the smiling faces I hope they were shamed a little into changing.”

He’s keen to spread the project beyond his immediate control and turn it into an international movement.  He talks of walls of umbrellas being carried into troubled areas the world over – Syria, North Korea.  “If soldiers were faced with a line of smiling children’s faces, how could they shoot?  They’d put their weapons down wouldn’t they?”  As he speaks I see visions of armies of umbrella-carrying peacekeepers coming between Israeli troops and Palestinian protesters. His problem, I sense, is communicating his dreams beyond the Japanese community, and he shows a keen interest when I speak of the power viral marketing; the Kony 2012 campaign does not seem to have been reported in the Japanese-language media.

“You know, last summer, after the earthquake and the shutdown of the reactors last year we had to save power in Japan.  People previously thought it impossible, but we refused to use air conditioning and shut down the lifts.  We were soaked in sweat but we thought of Tohoku.  And guess what? We managed a 20% decrease in power usage!  If everyone around the world cooperated in that way, think of all the wars we could stop!”

So was MERRY LONDON a success?  “Yes, it was.  The walk was good.  But when we arrived in Green Park and children were waiting for us in the shade under the trees playing, I felt it was beautiful.  That was ‘merry’ for me – British and Japanese kids playing together and relaxing. You know what also made it special?  The famously bad London weather has been great for the entire time I’ve been here!  Perhaps god was smiling on our work? But this – the earthquake, the Olympics – it’s just a start. I want to show that this can be the future – I want to create the ripples in the ocean that spread beyond Tokyo and London to the world.”

MERRY LONDON

I had an interview from british journalist and writer Alastair Lomas on 29th July during olympic period. He wrote down my words on his small note book with his beautiful hand writing without recording. I was impressed by his well understanding and deep insight. I believed he is a conservative and authentic British writer.
